Dhanbad: Students of Binod Bihari Mahto Koyalanchal University (BBMKU) will soon have access to new opportunities in teacher education, as the Jharkhand government has approved the introduction of Integrated B.Ed. programs in six constituent colleges of the university. Additionally, B.P.Ed. (Bachelor of Physical Education) courses have been sanctioned in two colleges.
The new programs will be offered in accordance with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and will operate under the self-finance model. The initiative aims to strengthen teacher education and prepare a new generation of qualified and professionally trained educators.
Colleges and Approved Programs
According to the university's proposal, PK Roy Memorial College, Dhanbad, will introduce a B.Sc.-B.Ed. integrated course with an intake capacity of 100 students. RSP College, Jharia, has been approved to offer a B.Com.-B.Ed. program with 100 seats, while SSLNT Women's College, Dhanbad, will start a B.A.-B.Ed. course with 50 seats.
RS More College, Govindpur, will offer both B.A.-B.Ed. and B.P.Ed. programs with 50 seats each. BS City College, Bokaro, has received approval for B.Sc.-B.Ed. and B.Com.-B.Ed. courses, each with 50 seats. Chas College, Chas, will launch a B.A.-B.Ed. program with 100 seats and a B.P.Ed. course with an intake of 50 students.
NCTE Recognition Required Before Admissions
While the state government's approval marks a significant step forward, admissions to these programs cannot begin immediately. Except for PK Roy Memorial College, all participating institutions must secure recognition from the National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE) before starting the courses.
PK Roy Memorial College is required only to obtain a Fire No Objection Certificate (NOC). Admissions will commence only after all necessary approvals and regulatory clearances have been obtained.
Admissions May Take Up to Three Years
University officials have indicated that the process of obtaining NCTE recognition and completing other formalities could take anywhere between one and three years. As a result, it is unlikely that all colleges will begin admissions simultaneously.
First-Ever B.P.Ed. Program Under BBMKU
Currently, only the two-year B.Ed. program is offered at SSLNT Women's College, RSP College, and BS City College under BBMKU. With the implementation of the new academic structure, the university will introduce B.P.Ed. courses for the first time, expanding its teacher education offerings and creating additional career pathways for students interested in physical education and sports training.
The move is expected to significantly enhance teacher education infrastructure in the region and align the university's academic programs with the objectives of the National Education Policy 2020.
