When people think of Dhanbad, towering coal mines, black dust, and the title "Coal Capital of India" usually come to mind. Yet, hidden among these mines is an institution that has quietly transformed India's mining industry—not by extracting coal, but by making mining safer, smarter, and more sustainable. That institution is the Central Mining Research Institute (CMRI). For decades, CMRI was the scientific backbone of India's mining sector. The technologies developed here have saved countless lives, improved mining productivity, and influenced policies across the country. Although today it operates as part of CSIR-Central Institute of Mining and Fuel Research (CIMFR), its legacy continues to shape the future of Indian mining.
